Landscape Notes: Johanna Azalea, Rhododendron x kaempferi, produces red 2” diameter flowers later in the season than most azaleas. It grows slightly larger than other azaleas but works great for taller foundation plantings.
Exposure/Culture: Johanna Azalea, Rhododendron x kaempferi, prefers light shade and a well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. THe soil should have an acidic pH. Pruning should be done immediately after flowering has stopped.
Other Notes: Johanna Azalea, Rhododendron x kaempferi, has dark green foliage that really makes those red flowers pop during the late blooming. In the fall the dark green foliage shifts to a reddish hue during the winter months to add another accent to your landscaping. Use this azalea as a background for your earlier blooming azaleas to extend color around your home.
