Landscape Notes: ’Green Lustre’ Holly, Ilex crenata is yet another of the ever-popular Japanese Hollies. It provides interesting form, being somewhat flat in habit, yet attaining good size. The leaves are larger than ‘Helleri’ and remind one of ‘Rotundifolia’.

Exposure/Culture: ’Green Lustre’ Holly, Ilex crenata does exceptionally well in full sun or partial shade. Does the best in slightly acid, heavy soils. Not suited for sandy soil or dry conditions. ‘Green Lustre’ Holly responds favorably to supplemental fertilizer and water. Prune to shape.

Other Notes: ’Green Lustre’ Holly makes a great substitute for boxwoods. It has lustrous dark green leaves and is an easy to grow evergreen shrub. ‘Green Lustre’ Holly produces black berries in the fall to add a visual interest. It can be used as a foundation planting or shrub border.
