Landscape Notes: ‘May Night’ Salvia, Salvia x superba is one of the showiest and longest blooming of cold hardy Salvia. Its indigo blue flowers bloom in densely packed, narrow spikes. ‘May Night’ Salvia, Salvia x superba grows in clumps at a moderate to fast growth rate.
Exposure/Culture: ‘May Night’ Salvia, Salvia x superba thrive in full sun to partial shade conditions. Prefers well drained, moist soils. ‘May Night’ Salvia, Salvia x superba is tolerant of heat, drought, and a wide pH range. Doesn’t do well in high humidity with heat. Deadhead as aging flower stalks begin to lean; flowers are a standard spike. Cut back in late fall or early spring.
Other Notes: ‘May Night’ Salvia, Salvia x superba can be used to blend small and large mounded plants, such as Candytuft Dwarf Aster, and Fountain Grass, or to contrast with rounded blooms like those of Yarrow. As the flower stalk is bloomed out, cut it just above the main foliage mass. New flowering shoots develop near stem base. ‘May Night’ Salvia, Salvia x superba is basically pest free.
