Landscape Notes: English Ivy, Hedera Helix has long been used as a ground cover, especially in the south. It has beeen used effectively as a climbing plant on brick surfaces. It is very appropriate for covering large areas. When planting as a groundcover in the landscape we highly recommend planting English Ivy in areas where it can be easily be kept in bounds by trimming around the edges. It works well as a groundcover under shade trees however you'll need to clip it once or twice a year to keep it from growing up the trunks of trees.


Exposure/Culture: English Ivy, Hedera helix should be planted in part shade to shade. It will tolerate some direct light if moisture is provided. Does best in organic soil, with medium to high moisture and fertility. Needs moderate pruninig to control. Should not be allowed to climb on painted surfaces.


Other Notes: English Ivy, Hedera helix works nicely in container gardens and hanging planters to cascade over the edges. It can also be trained into formal shapes on trellises or made into topiary figures. In large interior plantings, English ivy makes a good ground cover and cover in free-standing planters containing interior trees.
